About Us

Greenhills is a typical suburban parish in south-west Dublin which evolved over a period of about 30 years.  On 3rd November 1968 the foundation stone for the Church of the Holy Spirit, Greenhills, was laid by Archbishop John Charles McQuaid. The Sister's of Charity of St. Paul the Apostle donated 3.413 acres of land to the parish for the church. The work was carried out under the direction of Canon James Flood, parish priest of Walkinstown. The Church was blessed and opened on 25th January 1971. Later that year the parish was handed over to the care of the Spiritans (Holy Ghost Fathers) with Fr. Pat Smyth, C.S.Sp. as parish priest.

The parish is committed in a very practical way to the ideals of renewal and development being promoted by the diocese. It tries to be inclusive and encourages the involvement of all who make the church their spiritual home. The renewal programme is animated and coordinated by the Parish Pastoral Council.  There is a wide variety of active parish groups, and when a full count is made there are almost 200  parishioners  directly involved in a wide variety of ministries, such as readers, ministers of the eucharist, the altar society, finance committee, the maintenance team, the liturgy team the junior and senior choirs, the folk groups, to name but a few. All together they help to enliven our liturgies, build up our community, and maintain our church and grounds. This is not counting the various apostolic groups, prayer groups and active age groups.
